This is the MAC version: http://www.astrojargon.net/40DShutterCount.aspx
The author says 40DShutterCount is the 'old' version of the newer EOSInfo.

I use this http://homepage.mac.com/aozer/EV/
I've checked images from both my 40D and also my 1D MkII. I can't guarantee it's accuracy but it does appear to be OK.
I've cross referenced it with this http://www.camerashuttercount.com/ and a couple of other actuation counters I've come across and the count has matched and so I take it on face value.
Based on the amount I shoot, I reckon it's right.

I tried the CS5 --schema thing and got 0 for mine. I know it has more than 0 on it.

I've made an OS X app called EOS Inspector that reads shutter actuations count:
http://eosinspectorapp.com
You can download it on the Mac App Store via this link:

No, gphoto and its underlying lib are completely unrelated to my app. Moreover, I believe it is not even possible to use this method if you want to distribute your app on the Mac App Store.
I hope you will find my little app useful!

I am very happy with ShutterCount.app and it only cost me $2 when I got it.
There are free options, yes, but they require an internet connections on a website.
THe app works on my laptop without internet to check my friends gear or used gear.
Worth it to me. (Old thread, but still valid info)

EOS Inspector is free and it doesn’t require an internet connection because it is a self-contained OS X application. Give it a try and let me know what you think about it.

None of these applications work on my cameras under OS X 10.8 or 10.6 (my backup computer). I even downloaded and compiled gphoto2, but it returns 'unknown camera' for both my 550D and 7D.
On the bright side, POTN user mij posted this gem:
Mac Shutter Count App
and it works perfectly on both of my computers, both of my cameras.

The odometer for your camera.

ShutterCount displays the number of shutter actuations (the shutter count) of your Canon EOS, Nikon or Pentax digital camera, so you can easily check whether a newly purchased camera is really new, or check how heavily used a pre-owned item is. And you can save a trip to a service center by doing the reading for yourself. The count is read directly from USB or Wi-Fi connected Canon EOS DSLRs and select mirrorless models, as well as from image files for Nikon and Pentax cameras.

Camera Shutter Count App

Trusted by 150,000+ customers from 120+ countries, this is the gold standard in shutter count reading software.

Now with complete USB support on iOS
and iPadOS 13.4!

176 cameras, unlimited readings.

ShutterCount is certified to work with 90 Canon EOS (including recent ones), 58 Nikon and 28 Pentax camera models. The app provides unlimited readings for your cameras for a single price.

'Instead of going through the tutorials to do a bunch of steps I wasn’t comfortable with, I just launched this and it worked quickly and accurately.' — floint, United States

Live view and videos.

The app displays the count for still photos by default — purchase the optional Live View Pack to get additional counters (and the Distribution Chart) that also cover videos. The Live View Pack is available as an in-app purchase for select Canon models. It is included in ShutterCount Pro by default.

Keep your history.

History logging allows you to track camera usage. Logs are stored in CSV format that can be imported into Apple's Numbers or Microsoft Excel for further processing.

Go Plus.

The optional Plus Pack adds graphing, forecasting, history deduplication and Canon EOS camera management (date/time sync, owner name editing, copyright info setting, outdated firmware warning, IPTC export/import). The Plus Pack is available as an in-app purchase. It is included in ShutterCount Pro by default.
